Black and white photographs (4x5" and 35 mm negatives, contact prints, and some enlargements prints) taken by F. Peter Weil during his time as a student at Institute of Design in Chicago, ca. 1952-1964. Of particular significance are images of Aaron Siskind teaching class. Photographs are arranged in thematic series. The subjects include: interiors of lobby and apartments in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's 860-880 Lake Shore Drive buildings, paint factory fire, synagogues (including Pilgrim Baptist Church) and image with bunting on the church and sign reading "The Progressive Nat'l/Sunday School [illeg.] Congress (?)/[illeg. date; may be 1964, per negatives in Box 4]"), Frank Lloyd Wright houses, Evanston, the Rookery, Polk Street Stations, and Chicago Tribune tower buildings, virtual volume (an Institute of Design class exercise), an exhibit installation (possibly at Institute of Design), C.P.C., and others.

Biographical Note
F. Peter Weil (1913 - 1997) studied photography at the Institute of Design, beginning ca. 1952. Aaron Siskind was among his teachers. Weil later worked as a professional photographer at the Newberry Library in Chicago.
Provenance
Collection was transferred to IIT Archives in May 2000 from the IIT College of Architecture's Graham Resource Center (architecture library) by the GRC director who had received the collection from Peter Weil, ca. Jan. 1992. No donor paperwork accompanied the collection at the time of its transfer to IIT Archives. Subsequent attempts to contact Mr. Weil by IIT Archives were unsuccessful.
