Institutional chronologies collection, 1963-1993

 Collection
Identifier: 039.01.67

Six typed chronologies containing timelines of institutional histories of Armour Institute of Technology (1892 - 1940), Lewis Institute (1896-1940) and Illinois Institute of Technology (1940 - present).

Each covers a different time range and each was apparently compiled from different sources, though much of the information is repeated and consistent from one chronology to the next. While many of the events concerning IIT and its predecessors and affiliates listed in these chronologies are documented in other historical sources, the following topics, less well covered elsewhere, are presented in this collection: military and government-related programs, radio broadcast programs, institutional administrative and academic structure, fund-raising campaigns, serial publications, Fire Protection Engineering program, Home Economics program, fraternities, and IIT building program/campus development.

Biographical Note

Illinois Institute of Technology was created in 1940 by the merger of two Chicago technical colleges founded in the 1890s, Armour Institute of Technology and Lewis Institute. Since 1940, other schools, notably Chicago-Kent College of Law, The Institute of Design, Stuart School of Business have merged with or been created by IIT to form its current makeup as an science and engineering university with several graduate schools which also include the College of Architecture and the Institute of Psychology. Armour Research Foundation (ARF) was one of the first private, not-for-profit contract research laboratories in the United States. Begun in Chicago in 1936 by Armour Institute of Technology (AIT), ARF was acquired by Illinois Institute of Technology in 1940 when IIT was created by the merger of AIT and Lewis Institute. Re-named Armour Research Foundation of Illinois Institute of Technology, it was later reorganized as the IIT Research Institute (IITRI). Under all its iterations, the laboratory conducted research for commercial and government sources, expanding to an international operation.
